GUIDELINES

LEVEL 1

To gain any NCEA qualification, students need to attain 10 literacy credits and 10 numeracy credits.

Year 11 is the beginning of a two year journey where students work towards attaining a NCEA Level 2 Qualification (which automatically gain their NCEA Level 1).

At Fairfield College there is more focus on learning rather than preparing students for assessment. Students sit internal NCEA assessments and end of topic formative school assessments. Some external NCEA assessments are offered.

For NCEA assessment purposes each course will offer a maximum of two internal NCEA assessments.

YEAR 11 STUDENTS

Will be doing five subjects. You must select three (plus two backups):

  • English (or Te Reo) and Mathematics are compulsory.
  • Science is strongly recommended.

LEVEL 2

Year 12 is the second year of the springboard stage of learning and leads into the pathway stage where students meet the requirements of attaining NCEA Level 2 by completing Level 2 courses and assessments. At this stage a student will be able to achieve a certificate of endorsement at Level 1 and/or Level 2 and subject endorsement at Level 2.

YEAR 12 STUDENTS

  • Must select five subjects (plus two backups).
  • English or Te Reo Maaori is strongly recommended.
  • Mathematics is also highly recommended.

Students may choose a multi-level programme of study, including subjects from Year 11 or Year 12.

LEVEL 3

Year 13 is considered the Pathway learning stage where a student will work towards achieving a purposeful Level 3 NCEA qualification. Students will continue to work with their Pouako, Year Level Dean, Academic Dean and the school Pathways Leader in an attempt to place them in the strongest possible position to meet the course requirements that they require for tertiary study, or for the skills and knowledge required to secure employment in their chosen pathway.

YEAR 13 STUDENTS

  • Must select five subjects (plus two backups).
  • If considering University study, three university approved subjects at Level 3 must be taken and a minimum of four are recommended.
  • Students may choose a multi-level programme of study, which includes subjects from any level.
